Scuba Diving Tips: How To Equalize Every Time
PADIEqualize every time.
RULE #1:
Equalize on the surface before beginning your descent.
RULE #2:
Equalize immediately upon beginning a descent and continue to do so every few feet to avoid discomfort.
RULE #3:
Don’t wait until discomfort is felt before equalizing.
RULE #4:
If you have trouble equalizing, ascend slightly and try again. Try flooding and clearing your mask. If after repeated attempts you still can’t equalize, abort the dive.
RULE #5:
If you have trouble equalizing, use a line to help control your descent and maintain a feet-down position.
RULE #6:
Never attempt a lengthy or forceful Valsalva maneuver. You may rupture your eardrum or round-window.
RULE #7:
Never continue a descent unequalized, if you are unable to equalize after trying everything then abort the dive. and that you need to signal if you have an issue because no one can see whether equalization is successful.
HELPFUL TIPS
On Land: If it’s been a while since your last dive, practice equalizing the night before to limber up and make sure your eustachian tubes are dear.
Underwater: Always signal if you have an issue. Other divers cannot see whether or not you are able to equalize.
