Spyderco Salt 2 Wharncliffe Dive Knife: ScubaLab Testers Choice
We tested the Spyderco Salt 2 Wharncliffe dive knife. Compact, corrosion-resistant and eager to cut, it was our Testers Choice for dive knives.
We tested knives for their ability to cut a variety of lines, from monofilament fishing line to heavy rope. We also evaluated how well they held an edge after repeated use. We rated them for the performance of their sheaths, their locks and grips, and how easy they were to handle and operate – with and without gloves. We tested how they held up to extremely heavy use, including prying and cutting metal wires. And we gauged their resistance to corrosion by soaking them for up to 24 hours in saltwater.
While it features a new Wharncliffe-style blade, this latest member of the Salt 2 line has all the familiar attributes of Spyderco Marine models. The blade is made of H1 steel, which we’ve been unable to corrode in saltwater in past tests despite our determined efforts. The fiberglass-reinforced nylon handle is tough, comfortable and secure to grip, and the lock mechanism is rock-solid. The Wharncliffe blade has a thick, curved back to support the full length of its straight, 2.9-inch, hollow-ground serrated edge (the Salt 2 is also available with a plain edge). The blade proved to be, as one tested noted, “an eager cutter,” taking excellent cutting scores across the board and holding its edge well. “Cuts 1/2-inch line like green beans,” noted another tester.
