PERFORMANCE
» Simulator
4 (Very Good)
» Real World 4 (Very Good)

FEATURES
Designed for use in demanding cold-water environments, the first stage incorporates Mares’ Cold-Water Dry kit, and the metal second stage is coated with a fluoropolymer-resin finish to help keep components from freezing. Mares’ Vortex Assisted Design of the second stage — which directs air through a bypass valve to the mouthpiece — reduces breathing resistance. The patented mesh-design second-stage cover minimizes free-flow and eliminates the need for a manual venturi adjustment. The only reg over $500, the Abyss proved to be a solid performer, posting above-average results in every simulator test. In real-world diving, the Abyss received the best combined ergonomic score, garnering very good to excellent scores in all categories.

BOTTOM LINE
Designed for extreme temps, this reg delivers for divers in recreational environments, too.
