In a recent article on line and in the magazine, three general dive sites are discussed for Costa Rica. About 18 months ago, two dive shops opened in the town of Quepos which is near Manual Antonio National Park. Last summer I dove with Oceans Unlimited while doing an Spanish immersion program in Quepos. They did half day trips (2 tank dives) near the park. The boat rides out were usually a speedy 10 to 20 minutes. Water temps were in the mid to high 80's. Viz ranged from 20 feet (the morning after a heavy rain) to 50 feet. Surge was strong at times, so losing dive buddies was at times a risk. I saw lots of critters - fish, octopus, turtles, eels, lovely corals, ray. It was my first ocean diving (I am a novice diver) and I thoroghly enjoyed it. Other divers said that it wasn't as nice as Caribbean diving. Oceans Unlimited also does excursions toward Jaco beach and to Cano Island. I dove at Cano at another time and the viz is much better there and I got to see white tipped reef sharks on each dive. Considering how close Quepos is to San Jose, if you are doing a vacation in Costa Rica and want to include some diving, it certainly is a fun adventure to dive this Central Pacific region.
