Chasing the Shot: Malpelo Island

Diving Among Jacks in Malpelo Island, Colombia
Sten “the Viking” Johansson swims into the vortex, sacrificing himself to a tornado of bigeye jacks (Caranx sexfasciatus). This rarely visited rock in the vast Pacific is a premier place to encounter—and photograph—huge fish schools. To capture the fishy abundance, I used a fisheye lens and patiently waited for the school to morph into dramatic, artistic shapes.
Need to Know Malpelo is a year-round destination best suited for advanced divers due to strong currents, depth and its remote location. Waters are warmest and clearest summer to fall. Operator: M/V Ferox liveaboard (colombiadiveadventures.com).
