Geography
The Revillagigedos Archipelago, well known for diverse big animal diving is the northern most island group of the Panamic Pacific. Other islands in this region include Galapagos, Cocos, Malpelo and Clipperton. The Revillagigedos Archipelago is made up of: Roca Partida, Socorro, Clarion, and San Benedicto islands. Almost due South of Cabo San Lucas by about 250 miles, the islands are uninhabited except for a small navy garrison on Socorro and Clarion islands.
Animals
Manta Birostris, known as the Giant Pacific Manta, grow up to 9m wide (avg 6.7m). Primarily plankton feeders, they use cephalic fins on the head to guide plankton into their mouths. Females give birth to 1-2 pups that measure about 1.2m after a few months gestation. These gentle giants allow divers up close at the Socorro Islands Click here for some amazing video. The ‘Elasmorbranchion’ or shark population is very diverse. It is common to see: Silky, Galapagos, Hammerhead, Silvertip, White tip, and Tiger sharks. These beautiful animals take advantage of the marine preserve which surrounds the islands.
