Features:

  • 840-denier nylon construction
  • 3-D spandex gusseted air cell
  • Air-cell-independent Personal Harness System
  • Double-locking integrated-weight system
  • Three remote exhaust valves
  • Padded backpack

Performance:

The air cell on the Hydro D is horseshoe-shaped, which enables the tank to be positioned closer to the body. Removable bungee straps rein in the air cell at depth to minimize hydro drag, and three remote exhaust valves allowed test divers to easily control their buoyancy in all diving positions. Female test divers liked the responsive and supercompact power inflator that fits neatly into smaller hands, but found the BC a bit “long waisted.” On the other hand, the female test divers found the cargo pockets functional and accessible, while male divers had trouble getting their hands into them. All test divers agreed the Hydro D was comfortable and very stable at depth. Like on the Alpha, the weight-ditch handles are positioned a ways back from centerline. But once grasped, they ditch without problem. Bonus: The Hydro D’s horseshoe wing can be removed for easy replacement.

Bottom Line:

The Hydro D offers lots of adjustment, is comfortable and behaves well underwater. It also carries 2-and-a-half pounds of inherent buoyancy, among the highest of this year’s tested BCs.

General-Purpose BCs
---
While they can be used for any type of diving, general purpose BCs are designed primarily for temperate- and/or cold-water diving with 7mm wetsuits or drysuits. General Purpose BCs tend to offer lots of buoyant lift across their size ranges along with heavy-load integrated weight systems. They often have large cargo pockets and larger D-rings for attaching additional gear.

Travel BCs
---
Travel BCs are lighter and more compact than General Purpose BCs. Many are designed to fold or stow in handy storage pouches for easy globe-trotting. Travel BCs tend to offer less buoyant-lift capacity and smaller weight pouches to suit warm-water diving scenarios.

SeaSoft Travlite| Zeagle Express/Deluxe
Women's BCs
---
Women are shaped differently than men, so it makes sense that a women’s BC would be shaped differently too. Women’s BCs are often cut higher along the waist and are more expansive in the chest area. Straps and adjustments accommodate shorter, narrower torsos, and power inflators are ultracompact to fit comfortably into smaller hands.
