Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest Set For Oct. 29

Key Largo, Florida Keys--Scuba divers finally have a good reason to strap on a knife. Key Largo's annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest, hosted by Amy Slate's Amoray Dive Resort, mile marker 104 bayside, is set for Sunday, Oct. 29.

The contest, or "skills competition" as it's called, is open to all certified scuba divers and is slated for the day's morning dive.

Each participating buddy team is to receive a hollowed-out Cucurbita pepo (otherwise known as a pumpkin), which is to be turned into a work of creative underwater art during the one-of-a-kind contest.

An internationally renowned team of judges, doubling as the Amoray Diver crew, will be on hand to determine the winners. Prizes are to be awarded based on creativity and execution, and an impartial jury of Amoray crewmembers has described the prizes as "cool."

Space aboard the dive boat is limited, so would-be competitors are encouraged to sign up early.

There is no contest entry fee. The only cost is the regular dive boat fee of $70 per diver for the two-tank dive. The resort is offering specially priced multi-dive and dive-lodging packages.

For more information and to sign up, call Amy Slate's Amoray Dive Resort at (305) 451-3595 or toll-free at (800) 426-6729.

To find out about area accommodations, call the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce at (305) 451-4747 or (800) 822-1088, or visit the Florida Keys Key West Web site at www.fla-keys.com.
