Seahorses can be elusive on the reef, but pretty much every diver loves the hunt. Encounters with these intriguing creatures are always a highlight, and this November, Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is opening a new exhibit that will explore their unique biology and aim to educate visitors about the threats facing seahorses and their cousins, the weedy and leafy sea dragons. There’s Something About Seahorses will open to the public on Nov. 14, with a 2,000-square-foot interactive exhibit. It will help bring attention to the ways Birch Aquarium is helping to conserve seahorses by serving as a world leader in their captive breeding to help reduce collection pressure on seahorses in the wild. They have raised 12 species in the past 15 years and hope to continue to educate people about conservation. The aquarium is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, and tickets are $11 per adult and $7.50 for children (children under 2 are free). For more info, visit www.aquarium.ucsd.edu.
