Just Back: DEMA 2009

Hammerheads off Molokai

Hawaii is known for its abundance of life, but we were really excited to talk to the folks from Lahaina Divers in Maui about the appearance of scalloped hammerheads off Molokai. Not just a few, but giant groups — by some accounts hundreds. Check out www.lahainadivers.com for more details.

New Aqua Lung Travel Bags

No one likes airline baggage fees, so that’s why we were impressed with the new Traveler series of gear bags from Aqua Lung. There are several sizes and shapes to choose from, but the best part is that not one of them weighs more than 10 pounds, meaning you can stuff more into every crevasse and not go over the 50 pound limit. And did we mention they have a lifetime warranty that includes damage from the airline. Yes, you heard us right, including damage caused by the airline — we saw it in writing, right on the tag. Check them out at www.aqualung.com

Spare Air Birthday Giveaway

Spare Air is turning 30 this year, and to celebrate they are giving everyone that buys a Spare Air in 2010 a free gift carrying case with purchase as long as supplies last. So if you’re going to buy a back-up air source this year, do it early. Details will be up on www.spareair.com soon.

3D TV: National Parks Service

The National Park Service was at DEMA this year promoting the great diving that can be found right in our own backyards. And we were impressed with their new 3-D video being rolled out in visitor centers around the country this year. Nothing like seeing a wreck or cool geological formations in the parks in high-def 3-D. Discover your local parks at www.nps.gov.

Liquid Image Scuba Series mask

Liquid Image just started shipping out their Scuba Series HD camera masks in September, so our first real look at them was on the show floor at DEMA. The five megapixel camera takes photos and video and has a depth rating of 115 feet, so we thought it might make a cool holiday gift for some of the divers on your list who are interested in some hands-free photography. Check them out at www.liquidimageco.com
