Scuba Diving Lessons: How To Pick a Dive Instructor

It’s exciting! You’re about to commit to getting certified as a scuba diver. You’ve done your homework and chosen the certification agency. You’ve purchased a mask, snorkel and fins. You’re all set, right? Not quite — don’t overlook the most important person in your journey to becoming a diver, your instructor.

What should you look for in a good dive instructor?

Different instructors have different educational philosophies. But what you need to decide is how you like to learn. Some students are capable of learning new things quickly. Others learn at a slower pace. Some like home study. Others like the discipline of meeting with and learning from an instructor in a classroom.

Which is best depends on you and how you learn. Be honest with yourself.

Questions to Ask Your Diving Instructor

  1. How long have you been teaching and how many divers have you certified?

  2. What agency are you affiliated with? Why?

  3. Why do you love diving?

  4. What’s included in the price?

  5. What’s the process and how long will it take?

  1. Ask to observe a class. Is the instructor patient with his/her students? Does he/she communicate well? Does he/she instill confidence in the students?

  2. Ask for names and contact info of recent graduates of the course. A reputable instructor should be quick to offer references.

Once you’re satisfied the instructor is perfect for your style of learning, you’re ready to embark on an exciting adventure. Congratulations!
