You’re anxious. Your nerves tingle as you huddle in a circle of divers just off the deck of the Austin Smith, watching intently as dozens of reef shark patrol the periphery of the former Bahamian Defense Force cutter. You know what’s coming next. It’s why you’re here. After all, what diver would pass up the chance to experience a shark feed in the gin-clear waters of the Bahamas’ Exuma Cays with a 90-foot-long intact wreck as a stage?

Still, what happens next comes as a surprise. A horde of sharks swarms knowingly as the divemasters of the Aqua Cat attach a bucket-shaped chumsicle to a line descending from the Nassau-based liveaboard. Once the block of fish is in place, however, an order is established. The sharks perform an elegant, underwater dance while feeding on the fishcicle. Individual sharks undulate around the bait and grab mouthfuls in turn.

They aren’t the only ones looking for a piece of the action. Yellowtail snapper hover below the sharks sneaking a bite whenever they can. Queen triggerfish and giant Nassau grouper get their share, sharks or not. Meanwhile, runty black grouper lurk on the edges, waiting for fish crumbs to fall their way. Throughout the 40-minute banquet, divemasters enter the feeding frenzy to break off chunks of the chumcicle with metal pokers and play waiter to the feeding hoards of marine life.

Once this dinner theatre nears its denouement, the satisfied sharks head off into the deep blue sea while you and your fellow divers kick towards the sparkling sunlight above. Both you and the sharks are already looking forward to your next visit.
