What About Saint Lucia?
Have I caught you daydreaming about your next best underwater adventure? There are so many choices and so much to consider that I've always had a hard time recommending just one. So, I usually turn the question around and ask what you're looking for, then respond accordingly. However, when pressed, I realize that "the best" for me conjures up a feeling, story-worthy moments mixed with those no words can describe. And that's exactly how I feel about Saint Lucia! It's an island of just such contrasts.

Let's start with the fact that it's the only sovereign nation in the world named after a woman, and a saint at that! Its natural beauty and rejuvenating effects are unique and undeniable. From hiking the world-famous volcanic Pitons that plunge into the Caribbean Sea to zip-lining through rainforests, soaking in sulfur springs, or stretching out on a sandy beach, you get to pick your pleasure.
And what kind of life does sweet Saint Lucia have to show for herself beneath the surface, you ask? Well, as far as those of us lucky enough to have been diving there are concerned, that's exactly what keeps us coming back for more. That, and the PADI affiliated dive centers that prioritize safety first, offering everything from Discover Scuba experiences to specialty certifications and even instructor training.

I was so happy to see that Scuba Diving readers voted Saint Lucia Readers Choice Awards in 10 categories, including "Best Overall" and "Health of Marine Environment." There are shore dives on house reefs that became designated marine sanctuaries long before that was a thing to do. Cargo ships were sunk, with the foresight that these artificial reefs would grow colorful coral life and attract interesting marine life for decades to come.
The drift diving along dramatic walls is where my friends the turtles, rays, and dolphins play. And nothing is more fun in my mind than finishing off a dive in the sunlit shallows, with all the juveniles buzzing about, and the tiniest of critters that make the day for macro enthusiasts. I personally could follow a lazy octopus around for hours, but alas, our dive computers and appetites tell us it's time for lunch!
Saint Lucia, unlike many Caribbean islands, is rich in homegrown local cuisine. Natural resources and the African, Creole, French, and British influences combine to offer irresistible options at every meal. This is also the best time of day to regroup with your nondiving friends and family, perhaps plan an easy afternoon snorkel, kayak, or meander down the scenic shore. Now you have surely earned your sunset happy hour, subtly infused with the perfect blend of calypso, Soca and jazz tunes from local musicians—yes!

The Saint Lucian People: A Special Touch
It cannot be underestimated that our time in Saint Lucia is made extra special by the Saint Lucian people. What makes all the difference as a visitor is being greeted with the most genuine smiles and real interest in your day. You can tell that they take real pride in their country and are happy to share all they know about it. I love indulging in the tastes and talks about how local cacao farms make the purest chocolate and local distillers make the most delightful Bounty rum! A guided hike to hidden waterfalls or an afternoon enjoying a naturally indulgent spa experience is made so much richer when shared with informed and enthusiastic Saint Lucians.
Special Events and More
Special events like September’s Dive Fest add another layer of enrichment and value to your visit. Inquire with your dive resort of choice for special packages that may include lionfish talks, dives and dinners, coral restoration experiences, photography, reef cleanups, sunset cruises, and more. You might also consider scheduling a visit around other seasonal events such as winter whale watching or jazz, arts, and cultural festivals.
