How to Care For Your Dive Computer
The last thing you want as a diver is for water, silt or sand to infiltrate your scuba diving computer and muck everything up. Proper predive prep and postdive care will go a long way in ensuring your valuable computer will last. Here are a few tips from our Gear Editor on keeping your scuba diving computer in great shape.
DIVE COMPUTER CARE — BEFORE YOU DIVE
• Check the battery, and charge or replace it if necessary. If it’s user replaceable, be sure to install the new battery in the correct orientation, and carefullyinspect the battery housing o-rings to make sure they’re clean and undamaged
• If your computer uses a transmitter, also check the transmitter battery
• Depending on the type of computer, check straps and hose connections for signs of damage or wear
• Check the screen protector is undamaged and in place to prevent damage
• Make sure all buttons operate properly
DIVE COMPUTER CARE —AFTER YOUR DIVE
• Allow your computer to soak in clean, fresh water until it’s thoroughly rinsed
• While it’s soaking, operate all the buttons and swirl the computer around to dislodge any salt or debris
• Pay special attention to PC connections and sensor locations to make sure they’re clean
• Carefully wipe with a clean towel, and allow your computer it to dry thoroughly out of the sun before storing it
