I’m Roger Roy, the ScubaLab director. We tested the Beuchat Alize 3mm wetsuit. With top scores for comfort, it was our Testers Choice for suits under $200. We tested it in the field at Blue Grotto Dive Resort in Central Florida, and in ocean dives in South Florida. Our testing included both fresh and salt water, in water temperatures from the low 70s to the mid-80s. We evaluated it for ease of donning and doffing, and for its fit and overall comfort. We also rated it for how warm it kept us, and whether it limited our range of motion.

The Alize has a surfer look, but it also has design elements that proved to make it a comfortable suit. It’s cut without seams in the underarms where they can chafe. And the pre-curved elbows don’t bunch when your arms are in a natural dive position. The rolled smooth-skin seals at neck, wrist and ankles took the top score in the category for blocking water entry. We liked that the adjustable neck closure has the “hook” side of the fastener on the neck; that puts the soft “loop” side on the flap where it’s less likely to snag on the neoprene. While the suit was rated very good for warmth, that seemed more a result of the performance of the very effective seals than the material’s thickness, which feels on the lighter side. But for warmer water diving, no suit was rated more comfortable; one test diver, after an 82-minute dive, said the suit was “as comfortable at the end of the dive as when I started.” The Beuchat Alize is our testers choice for suits under $200.
