Welcome to Horizon Divers, Key Largo Drifting in the cobalt blue waters of Molasses Reef a diver notices something odd: On the underside of the Cheeca View (the dive boat he'd just been relaxing on), the letters HD had been painted in white on either side of the hull. The 46-foot catamaran made the short ride to the reef comfortable and relaxing. Before jumping into the crystal clear Key Largo waters, Capt. Troy briefed the divers on the simple navigation techniques needed for diving Eagle Ray Alley, the first of two reef dives for that day. During the trip from the dock to the reef, First Mate Bobby had told everyone the stories of the wreck of the Vitic and how Molasses Reef had gotten its famous name. As the divers moved down Eagle Ray Alley everyone took notice of Dive Instructor Cassie as she helped two of her students complete their pre-dive checks before their first open-water dives. The students picked the perfect day — dive conditions couldn’t have been better for demonstrating their skills to become recreational divers. Deeper into Molasses reef, there are three divers wearing double-tank setups leading the way down the alley. Owner Dan Dawson, a veteran of Key Largo diving and one of the best technical dive instructors around, was working with two future Tri-mix divers as they took their first fin kicks toward deep diving adventure.

The boat, the crew, the classes, and the diving were making for the perfect adventure out on the reef. As the divers relaxed in the sun’s setting light on their way back they could only dream of how amazing tomorrow’s dives on the wreck of the Spiegel Grove would be.

The next morning Dave was busy prepping Pisces for the trip to the Spiegel Grove. The smaller 30-foot Island Hopper vessel is perfect size for the smaller group of adventurers heading to the world famous wreck. Dan talked with his students about dive planning, helping the new technical divers to be prepared. Jeff and another technical diver were analyzing their Nitrox tanks and talking about the different rooms divers can access inside the wreck. The last four divers were from a dive shop in Indiana. For six years, this group has come to Horizon Divers, Key Largo, and the Spiegel Grove for the morning wreck dives. Jonni in the office had created the trip just for them in the front office, and more divers were making it even better. They all talked about their dives, experiences, and about how much they enjoyed just being on the ocean that morning. Each group has their own plans, depth and time limits, and they know at Horizon Divers they have the support to make their diving the most fun it can be.
