The Slingshot is actually three fins in one –– a pair of silicone Power Bands on the blade lock into a choice of three power positions to let you adjust your power-to-effort ratio. The rubber-reinforced thermoplastic blade attaches to the sides of the foot pocket at a pair of flex points. According to Aqua Lung, these flex points allow the foot to retain a more comfortable position and enable the blade to achieve a greater range of motion for increased kicking efficiency. The fin’s buckle system has been upgraded, and the strap now offers finger loops at each end for easy adjustment.

Performance

The first Power Band position gives the Slingshot maximum flexibility and delivers comfort and performance characteristics comparable to a top-end split fin. The second position makes for a slightly stiffer blade with a tad more feedback. During tests both positions delivered good acceleration and power with minimal leg strain while remaining nimble in the turns. The third position is the stiffest setting, more on par with a traditional paddle fin. In this position the fin proved to be a little slower with a bit more feedback, but test divers found it just as stable and responsive. Adjusting the Power Bands is easy –– you can do it on the surface or at depth, even wearing gloves. The fin sports a good nonskid pattern and a comfortable foot pocket. The finger loops on the strap are great for fine-tuning fit.

Bottom Line

Its multiple kicking characteristics give this fin a lot of versatility. Racking up the second-highest total ergo score and earning second place in the test team’s “Top 5 Favorites” list, the Slingshot is a winner.
