High school students with a background in scuba diving and love for the ocean have the chance to save money thanks to a unique scholarship.

The National Marine Conservation Scholarship (NMCS) is offering $500 to three high school seniors graduating in 2014 in an effort to aid student scuba divers who are committed to protecting the ocean environment.

The scholarship, based out of Woods Hole, Mass., hopes that helping the young divers will in turn preserve the ocean for future generations.

“By providing scholarships to high school seniors who are also certified scuba divers, it is the goal of the NMCS to enable young scholars to continue to dive, study and preserve the marine environment with passion…a gift from out generation to the next generation,” said a statement on the scholarship’s website.

Students applying for the scholarship will be judged on a combination of an essay, academic achievements, extracurricular activities and commitment to scuba diving.

In addition to the three winners, the scholarship will also select up to five other finalists and up to ten other semi-finalists, all selected by Oct. 15.

Applicants must apply no later than Sept. 15. For more information and to apply, visit www.marineconservationscholarship.org
