ScubaLab First Look: TUSA Hyflex Fin System

ScubaLab takes a first look at TUSA’s HyFlex System. This modular fin system is made up of a removable foot pocket and several interchangeable blades. The system provides the stability, rigidity and power of a normal fin, but easily breaks down into its separate components using a 3-mm hex key. Disassembled fins can easily fit in an average carry-on bag, making the design very convenient for travel and storage.

Ergonomic Foot Pocket

The ergonomic foot pocket is made using multiple materials to optimize comfort and performance. The curved lip of the foot pocket prevents chafing around the ankle and top of the foot. Foot pockets are available in four sizes are equipped a one-size fits all bungee. Optional adjustable straps and spring straps are also available.

Variety of Blades

There are currently five fin models available in the HyFlex line. They include all-around paddle fins, low-effort split fins and even heavy-duty tec-diving fins. Each fin utilizes the same HyFlex foot pocket. If a diver already owns a HyFlex fin and wants to purchase a different type of fin to accommodate a new style of diving, they can just purchase new blades and attach them to their existing foot pocket.

How to Assemble and Disassemble

To install the blade, push the foot pocket and blade together to mate the flange around the foot pocket into the grove in the blade. This is what holds the fin together and gives it its rigidity and stability. Secure the included corrosion-resistant screws with a 3-mm hex key to lock the blade in place. Remove the foot pocket by doing the reverse. Remove the screws before firmly pulling the foot pocket and blade in opposite directions to separate.

The Hyflex System provides a lot of flexibility as users can swap out blades to tailor performance to varying dive disciplines. This can help save money and space compared to purchasing a whole new fin for each type of diving. The two-part design is especially handy for travel and storage. Divers traveling to more challenging destinations will especially benefit from this space-saving feature, as it allows them to pack powerful, full-size fins in just about in piece of luggage.
