6 Virtual Events to Celebrate World Oceans Day

If your plans to celebrate World Oceans Day on Monday, June 8 have changed due to COVID-19, you’re not alone. Groups that typically use this international day of maritime celebration to educate the public about ocean health, policy, conservation and more had to pivot their plans.

Thankfully, that means there are still many ways to celebrate. A number of organizations are turning to technology, making their conferences and events into virtual broadcasts and livestreams.

Here are four World Oceans Day events taking place from Saturday, June 6 to Tuesday, June 11 that are free to attend open to public viewing:

June 6: Coralpalooza

Who: Coral Restoration Foundation

When: June 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. EST

Where: Register at coralrestoration.org/coralpalooza-2020

What: For the past five years, on World Oceans Day, Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) has hosted its annual Coralpalooza event, during which divers have gathered in the Florida Keys and at other sites around the world to restore local coral reefs.

While the 2020 event will look a bit different from years past, CRF is still using World Oceans Day as an opportunity to celebrate reefs. Coralpalooza 2020 will feature:

  • Digital booths where participants can live chat with coral experts around the globe
  • New videos and workshops from the CRF team
  • Presentations and interviews with coral and conservation experts
  • A CRF Kid’s Zone hosted by Captain Coral
  • A virtual treasure hunt to win CRF swag
  • Livestreams of local CRF staff on the water, outplanting corals to reefs

June 7: World's Largest Virtual Dive

Who: The Explorers Club and Hydrous

When: June 7 at 9 p.m. EST

Where: To take part in the virtual dive, visit The Explorers Club website here.

What: Part of World Oceans Week on explorers.org, explorers and Hydrous co-founder and CEO, Dr. Erika Woolsey will take you on a virtual dive on the coral reefs of Palau.

The world's largest virtual dive is part of the Decade of Ocean Empathy that begins Sunday, June 7. Make sure you don't miss any of the programs by tuning in early at 7 p.m. EST.

Joining the virtual dive is easy if you follow the below steps:

  • Order a Google Cardboard here.
  • Tune into World Oceans Week at 7 p.m. EST on Sunday, June 7
  • Scan the Immerse QR Code at the end of the program with your smartphone, with Google Cardboard in hand.
  • Join the world's largest virtual dive!
    Note: If you do not have access to a Google Cardboard or VR device, you can still participate by viewing the virtual dive on your smartphone or tablet.

June 7-8: Tune into PADI Instagram and Facebook Lives

Who: PADI

Where: PADI Instagram and PADI Facebook

What: PADI will be hosting a series of Instagram and Facebook live interviews with influential people in the dive community. Make sure you are following PADI on Instagram and Facebook to take part.

June 7 at 10:30 p.m. PST - Nayantara (Tara) Jain: Head of Reef Watch Marine Conservation in India will discuss local diving and conservation practices.
June 8 at 8:00 a.m. PST - Weldon Wade: Founder of Guardians of the Reef in Bermuda will focus on local diving practices in Bermuda as well as the invasive lionfish problem in the Caribbean.
June 8 at 11 a.m. PST - Jack Fishman, Community Conservation Officer at Project AWARE will lead a discussion on Project AWARE courses, the plastic pollution problem and how to become a torchbearer for the ocean.


June 8: UN World Oceans Day 2020

What: The 2020 United Nations World Oceans Day virtual event, “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean,” will be produced in partnership with the nonprofit Oceanic Global.

The event features a day-long lineup of panels, presentations and keynote speakers from notable ocean voices including:

  • Cara Delevingne, model and actress
  • Jean-Michel Cousteau, oceanographic explorer
  • Paul Hawken, climate and sustainability champion
  • Bill McKibben, author and co-founder of 350.org
  • Lilly Platt, 11-year-old youth ambassador for Plastic Pollution Coalition

June 8: Virtual Ocean Literacy Summit

Who: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

When: June 8 from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. EST (9 a.m. to 12 p.m. UTC)

What: UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission will host the first Virtual Ocean Literacy Summit on World Oceans Day. The event will celebrate the successes of the global ocean literacy community and delve into how scientific knowledge transforms into action.

Along with moderated debates and videos, the event will include panels on how our ocean connects, engages and inspires us, featuring notable speakers such as:

  • Thomas Remengesau Jr., President of Palau
  • Margaret Leinen, director of Scripps Institute of Oceanography
  • Lorenzo Bertelli, head of corporate social responsibility at Prada

June 9, 10, 11: EarthxOcean

Who: EarthX

When: June 9 from 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. EST, June 10 from 2 p.m. to 5:30 EST, June 11 times TBD

What: Put on in partnership with National Geographic, EarthxOcean is a virtual conference designed to increase awareness of how the ocean affects daily life.

The event aims to drum up support for ocean conservation from corporations, governments and citizens. Conference sessions will focus on topics like coral reef restoration, sustainable fisheries and ocean plastic solutions. Panelists and keynote speakers include:

  • Dr. Sylvia Earle, oceanographer and founder of Mission Blue
  • Julie Packard, executive director of the Monterey Bay Aquarium
  • Captain Paul Watson, CEO and founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society
  • Aulani Wilhelm, senior vice president of the Center for Oceans at Conservation International
  • Peter Mumby, chief scientist at the Great Barrier Reef Foundation
  • Tom Moore, coral reef restoration manager at NOAA’s Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
