Where To Scuba Dive with Napoleon Wrasse
RGB Ventures/AlamyA napoleon, or humphead, wrasse in the Maldives
With plump and protruding lips, the exquisitely patterned Napoleon wrasse is known for its size, sometimes growing to 7 feet in length. But its eagerness to interact with divers and other fish is what sets this gentle giant apart. Napoleon wrasse are usually found in groups of five or six, and divers love to see them hunt for small crabs and other crustaceans as they suck up everything from the reef and throw away the sand through their gills.
Also known as humphead wrasse, Cheilinus undulatus is identified as endangered on the IUCN Red List but can be found territorially in areas like the Maldives year-round.
Where to Go: Napoleon wrasse can be found in the Red Sea, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean and in great dive destinations like the Great Barrier Reef, Indonesia, the Maldives and more. Want to dive with napoleon wrasse? Check out the Four Seasons Explorer's Maldives itinerary.
