Very Good Cozumel Dive master

November 10, 2007 to November 17, 2007.

During our trip to Cozumel, we were suppose to dive with another dive shop. For unknown reasons, our group of four had trouble booking our itinerary. It was no fault to the dive shop, it was just the four of us were unable to get together before the trip and set in stone our plans.

We arrived on Sunday afternoon at the Cozumel Palace. Checking my email, a friend of mine who is a Cozumel regular, told me to find Abraham and Javier. It wasn't hard. Unsure of the dive op, we booked a two day 2-tank trip. The op was Black Shark. Fast boats with eight divers max. This was not a cattle boat op. The owner, Herberto, was very reasonable and accommodating. Our rates were far better than we originally budgeted. The dive master was Abraham and the boat captain was Javier.

After our first day of diving, we quickly booked the rest of our itinerary. Times of departure were flexible because all of the boats that left at 7-8 AM were left in our wake. We still beat every boat to the sites by 15 minutes, Abraham did not only dive. He did not drift at the lead or rear as we passed over the sites. He knew and found every creature on the reef or wall. He took very much pride in doing his job!

After proving your abilities of air consumption and buoyancy with Abraham, total bottom time at the best and more advanced sites were available. We dove usually with two other divers through out our stay. A few days we had tank burners. Not a problem! Abraham midway through the dive checked everyones air. The buddies that were short, ascended to their safety stops and quickly picked up by Javier. Others continued their dives.

The only problem we encountered were a diver who got mad because he was not allowed to burn his last 500 psi even though we were very near our recreational limits by computer. The other problem was a diver who refused to tip. Both problems were attributed to the same diver. This diver dove four dives plus a night dive with us. Five dives in all and not a single tip to Abraham. Needless to say, Abraham accommodated us and moved him to another boat. All other divers we dove with were experienced and some were fairly new. But everyone else were extremely happy with Abraham.

One small note. If you are unhappy, change operations. I don't know of any operation that will let you suck your tank totally dry and emerge into deco stops. But if the dive master is accommodating to your needs, please tip. Abraham and Javier are a team that subcontracts out to four different dive ops. Though I think you will find Black Shark will accommodate to your needs. Nothing fancy, but it definitely gets the job done. Next time in Cozumel, try Abraham and Javier. I think you will find you will get more bang for your buck!
