Scooter Dive
Location: Kona Coast
Depth: 60ft
Visibility: 50-100ft
Who it’s For: Anyone who wants to add some adventure to their life.
What Makes it Special:
Take flight on one of Jack’s Diving Locker’s new Apollo sea-scooters and your heart will “soar like a hawk”. You can take the PADI DPV (Diver Propulsion Vehicle) Specialty course and progress toward Master Scuba Diver in a single day. Or, simply hire a private guide and rent a scooter, and boldly go where no diver has gone before. Jack’s fleet of DPVs can accommodate a group of up to 4 thrill-seekers, plus their guide.
With a DPV, you get longer bottom times, because there is no effort. And with Michael Phelps-like speed, you can easily go over a mile in a single dive. With the Apollo DPV, you can ride 2 different ways. The traditional, hand-held method puts the trigger under your right thumb. But the real thrill comes when you “straddle the saddle”. Then you set the throttle and fly hands-free. You can use a GoPro, or give in to that urge to strike a Superman pose.

Kona’s volcanic topography is unique, with bouldery drop-offs, arches, and coral-covered lava pinnacles. “That’s the closest I’ll ever come to flying over a cliff in a wing-suit - without the fear or the danger”, said one diver.
DPV Instructor and Jack’s owner Jeff Leicher stated “For years, I never thought I needed a scooter. I was wrong. The first time I used one, I was hooked”. Covering more ground increases your chances of seeing big marine life. We’ve encountered sharks, turtles, manta rays, eagle rays, and the like while exploring Kona’s rich seascapes. “I feel like the sea-scooters give us an unfair advantage”, says Jeff, “so I generally slow down when I’m close to big animals, ‘power down’ and just enjoy them in silence.”
