Diving the Atomic Fleet of the Atomic Bomb Age August 2007
The US & Japanese Warships are an incredible site to behold. The Saratoga aircraft carrier is going the way of all old ships just sinking away. It's a real tragedy it was a magnificent dive in its day. The Nagato Battleship and Arkansas Battleship are still good dives as are the destroyers and submarines.
The dive staff are excellent and the food which is all-inclusive is hardy and plentiful. You won't be doing push-ups or working out during your stay unless you want to get bent so lose those extra pounds before or after your week on this magnificent island covering in thousands of coconut palm trees.
Plan on going to bed early or reading a good book, since there is no TV or radio reception on this remote atoll. Your private room has GREAT air conditioning which they say keeps the bugs out. I found the local lizards kept them in check except the little ants. They have some videos in their TV room so if you go bring them some more. They will really appreciate it. There are no women on the island so these guys are dying for DVD or VHS entertainment. I sent them a bunch of private type DVD's when I got back to the real world, as a token of my appreciation for their great service during my stay.
I personally recommend everyone to buy some Doc's Pro plugs to keep the abundant micro life out of your ears during the 30, 20 & 10' deco stops where you will hang out for about 30-minutes twice a day. Don't forget ear flush--I like Domeboro if you can get a RX for it. I came down with a miserable ear infection on my last dive day and missed it.
If you have a computer make sure you check their website to see if it will stand up to the deco's. Mine did not and I recommend their Nitek's which I rented.
Its a Great island to visit for a week and definitely add Truk Lagoon. Diving the San Francisco Maru with its 3-tanks on the deck ready for action and just pointing up ready to fire at an enemy in the deep at 180'and the Fujikawa Maru which had the most magnificent corals and abundant fish I have seen in my 700 dives around the world. It is a must see dive. Check out my Truk review for more information.
