Upper Florida Keys' Island Sun Splash 2007

Island Sun Splash 2007 will be held June 10-16 in the Upper Florida Keys, the DIVE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD. The event is designed both for not only the family that SCUBA dives together but also the single SCUBA divers and Snorkelers. There will be many fun-filled and informative activities for everyone, even the non-diver.

SCUBA divers will be able to enjoy both our shallow reefs and shipwrecks. The Upper Florida Keys offer, by far, the clearest water with more fish life than the remainder of the Florida Keys. Shipwrecks such as the USCG Duane, USCG Bibb, The Eagle and the world famous 510 foot Spiegel Grove can all be dived upon during this week of adventure. In addition to these deep shipwrecks the Upper Florida Keys offers several shallow shipwrecks, the City of Washington, the Benwood and 1733 Spanish Galleons, that can all be visited, even by the snorkelers.

The beautiful reefs of the Upper Florida Keys offer everyone from the youngsters snorkeling to the old salt SCUBA diver, unending adventure. The Upper Florida Keys offer you the best of the third largest barrier reef in the world. The thing that makes our section of reef so special is that it has been protected since the early 1960's. This has allowed the marine life to proliferate. There have been over 600 different species of reef fish identified on our reefs. This along with the clearest water of the entire Florida Keys allows all of our visitors to enjoy what our locals call our backyard.

There will be Try SCUBA, Refresher courses, snorkel lessons, Junior Olympics, Buoyancy Control Clinics and even an opportunity to try out a rebreather. This will all happen at the pool of Key Largo Resorts, which is our host resort. Key Largo Resorts is also offering discount room rates for the weeklong event.

The Key Largo Resorts is also providing our meeting room for all of the exciting seminars that are going to be offered. There will be a "How to" on basic underwater photography and cinematography. They will offer History of Diving Seminars, Technical diving and rebreather seminars, Reef Fish ID, the 1733 Spanish Treasure Fleet that sank in nearby waters and much more.

The organizers of the event all also offer several friendly competitions. The first can be a team effort for the entire family or individually. It is the Land & Sea Photo Scavenger Hunt. The object of the game is to photograph many of our local landmarks and our beautiful reef fish and score points to win wonderful prizes. There will a Junior Underwater Photography competition. It would thrill the organizers to see boat loads of youngsters out snorkeling taking photos with waterproof cardboard cameras of our beautiful marine life. Everyone will be a winner in this fun competition. Not to leave out the grown-ups there will also be an Amateur Photo and Video competition. Each of these participants will be eligible to win some great prizes.

The organizers have also lined up a Try Sailing program, a Kids Fishing Clinic, a good old-fashioned cookout, and entertainment. There is so much going on during this exciting week that the space is too limited to cover. So, please visit our website www.divecapital.org to get a complete outline of the activities and our schedule or just call one of our members.
