Shallow and chock full of myriad marine species, Salt Pier makes for a nice, long dive, day and night.

Divers enter from a smooth, wide sand plain north of the eponymous pier, walking down a gentle slope toward the site. Salt Pier’s labyrinth of pillars can confuse the novice diver, so it’s best to relax and let the dive guide lead the way.

Divers kick between tube and rope sponges reaching from the submerged beams, while fish and invertebrate life scuttle along the sea floor. Curious barracuda occasionally dawdle behind divers as they explore.

The clusters of pillars are beautifully decorated with sponges and corals. Salt Pier blossom as the sun begins to sink west, piercing the already-crystalline waters with radiant streaks of light. Night dives are brilliant, colorful spectacles as the encrusting corals catch in divers’ headlamps.

This site is a photographer’s dream dive: wide-angle shots and various exposure work yield incredible pictures to cherish for a lifetime. From Salt Pier’s coral-encrusted pillars to the collage of metal scraps and debris peppering the ocean floor, this dive contains enough photo subjects for an entire collection.
