Our Top 5 Favorite Shark Movies for Shark Week
Are you ready for Shark Week? We mean,_ really_ ready? Discovery Channel doesn't have the monopoly on sharks. Turn on Netflix or comb through your dusty DVD collection, and we think you'll find plenty of menacing movies to keep you out of the water for at least a week. Here are the five favorite shark movies from the editors of Sport Diver.
1. JAWS (1975): No surprise here, right? But did you know that Martha's Vineyard off Massachusetts served as Amity Island for this landmark film? It was chosen mainly because the ocean bottom off the island was just 30 feet down -- the perfect depth for the mechanical shark "Bruce" to operate. Martha's Vineyard residents, meanwhile, scored $64 each to run across the beach as extras.
2. DEEP BLUE SEA (1999): What happens when you combine scientists searching for a cure to Alzheimer's Disease and an intelligent but deadly predator? Well, you get Rise of the Planet of the Apes with James Franco. Oh, and you get this surprise box-office hit that starred Saffron Burrows, Thomas Jane, LL Cool J, and Samuel L. Jackson.
3. OPEN WATER (2003): This is the type of story they don't tell you when you're taking your first open-water certification dives. And for good reason! Two divers are accidentally left by their tour boat and left to bob around in shark-infested waters. You can see where this is going. Lesson to be learned: Never lose sight of that dive boat!
4. SOUL SURFER (2011): One could argue this is more of a surfer movie than a shark movie. Based on the true story of surfer Bethany Hamilton and her recovery from a horrific shark attack, this movie is possibly the only shark movie on this list safe for the whole family.
5. JAWS 2 (1978): Some say sequels are always disappointing, but just ask Capt. Kirk how he feels about that notion. ("Khaaaaan!") Lightning strikes twice at Amity Island for Chief Brody and at the box office. Grossing more than $100 million, Jaws 2 is one of the most financially successful sequels of all time.
Sure, there are some great shark films out there - but are you curious about the WORST? Our friends over at Scuba Diving magazine have put together a list of terrible shark films that are downright laughable.
