2011 ScubaLab BC Tests: Mares Hybrid

Mares Hybrid

Carrie Garcia

TOO LATE TOO TEST: Mares Hybrid
SPECS
» Style Hybrid
» Weight System Mechanical: Ditchable Pouches and Rear Trim Pouches
» Dry Weight 8.4 pounds
www.mares.com

FEATURES
The Hybrid arrived too late for testing, but we examined a prototype and came away impressed. Unique to the Hybrid is a hinged, foldable backpack that has the stability and comfort of a long backpack when open, but which is 30 percent shorter than a traditional backpack with a honeycomb structure that also makes it 40-percent lighter. Compact when folded (18-by-12-by-12 inches), it features an abundance of metal D-rings, Mares’ MRS weight system, ultralow-profile exhaust valves, a completely detachable harness, and a high-lift air cell with an estimated 43 pounds of lift (M/L size).
