Pelican Products has earned a reputation for building rugged, reliable lights, hard cases and accessories that offer performance on par with their legendary durability. This is certainly true of their new Nemo 4C dive light.
By pairing a precision focused reflector with a bright Xenon bulb, Pelican has created what is most likely the world's most powerful four C-cell dive light. It's also one of the most compact, with an egg-shaped rear housing that is not only ergonomically pleasing, but also surprisingly strong the light is depth-rated to 500 feet.
It's also covered by the company's legendary lifetime guarantee: the one that warrants it for everything except shark bites, bear attack or children under 5.
The only way to really test a product with this type of guaranteed, I realized would be to push it beyond the limits. Since I'm not too fond of shark bites, and there are no bears in the neighborhood, I decided to give it to my son, who was just a few weeks shy of his fifth birthday.
For two weeks the Nemo served as a tub toy, hammer, football and science project. With the exception of a few cosmetic dings, it survived without incident, and was subsequently used for a weekend of cavern diving.
When you are swimming around in a dark hole in the ground, it's good to know that your light is not only built to take on whatever the underwater environment can throw at it, but also nonwarranted abuses such as handling by an enthusiastic youngster. Hopefully, I'll never have to test its mettle in a bear attack.
