The latest trend in BCs incorporates automatic air-control devices in lieu of traditional external inflation hoses. Cressi-sub has joined this trend with the Flight Control System.
Unlike other such systems now on the market, Flight Control uses extra-large control surfaces and a mechanical rather than a pneumatic air-release valve. This allows the user to fine-tune the rate of inflation and deflation and makes it easy to operate the device by feel or when wearing gloves.
I test-dove the Flight Control system on the company's J107 BC. The BC itself is a solid, unpretentious product, constructed from 1000-Denier nylon and sporting an extra-large pair of storage pockets and a simple but effective integrated weight system that can handle up to 16 pounds of lead.
Overall, the 107 is a good choice for the traveling divers who might also make temperate water dives closer to home. For the price, it would be a good value, even without the Flight Control System.
The activator is positioned for easy reach by either the left or right hand, and there is no fumbling for or confusing the inflation and deflation controls without even a glance.
I found this to be especially helpful when diving with a large video housing. Small changes in buoyancy could be made easily without fumbling for the inflator hose or pausing to look down and locate the buttons.
Overall, the Flight Control System exceeded my expectations. Even better, it is available not only on the company's premium models, but also on a moderately priced BC like the J107.
